TUC 2018 – celebrating 150 years & looking to the future

TUC Congress 2018 kicks off this Sunday in Manchester and we are looking forward to attending as usual again this year – visit us on stand 39. This year’s Congress is bound to be a particularly special event, as it will also celebrate 150 years since the very first Trade Union Congress took place at the Mechanics’ Institute in Manchester. From 2nd to 6th June 1868, 34 delegates from all over the UK attended the meeting, representing 118,000 union members. The first resolution passed by that meeting was that ‘the trades of the United Kingdom should hold an annual congress’.

Happy 70th Birthday to the NHS

On 5 July 1948, the NHS was officially launched at Park Hospital in Manchester (now Trafford General Hospital) by then Health Secretary, Aneurin Bevan. Bringing together hospitals, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, opticians and dentists under one umbrella to provide healthcare services for free at the point of delivery, Bevan himself later described it as “the biggest single experiment in social service that the world has ever seen undertaken”.
